Mini Glaze Sieve for Ceramics – Designed by a certified glaze nerd!

Our co-founder Jeff Campana has been heavily involved in glaze research for his entire 25+ year career, and even has a popular clear cone 6 glaze recipe you might have encountered. He teaches glaze chemistry at the university, and the need for a better sieve presented itself last semester. This sieve was born out of his frustration with other options out there - that never seem to fit any common cups, containers or paint sprayers; lack venting so they need to be burped; cannot hang on a hook, and are so hard to clean. Let's not forget about the little mesh size sticker falling off and then you have to just estimate the mesh size by sight forevermore.

This is the only test-sized sieve on the market that was actually designed specifically around the experience of use. We did not just stick some PVC pipes together from the hardware store, we designed the product from the ground up, based on the experience of thousands of test glazes processed over the years. Sieving glazes is nobody's favorite activity, but it is an important one, and we dare say it might even be a little bit enjoyable with this sieve.

What Mesh Size is the right one?

Mesh size indicates the number of wires per linear inch in the screen—the higher the number, the finer the mesh. A finer mesh requires more effort to push material through but captures smaller particles. Ceramicists often select their preferred mesh size based on their specific needs. Generally, 60 Mesh suits general glaze and underglaze reconstitution, 80 Mesh is ideal for filtering out oolites and small crystals while breaking up colorants, and 100 Mesh provides the smoothest texture by breaking down the finest colorant particles, though it may also filter out some glaze, underglaze, or slip components.
