Why Throw on Tiles?

Our bat system is a bit different from most of them out there in that we use common tiles found at your local Lowes instead of masonite or wood materials. This offers a few notable advantages including:

  • Tiles are inexpensive. At just 35 cents each, you can have a virtually limitless amount of surfaces to throw on for almost no money.

  • Tiles never warp. This means you can store pots or even trimming chucks on them under plastic indefinitely, and even soak the tiles overnight for the most satisfying cleaning experience ever.

  • Tiles don't flex. Have you ever thrown a perfect round bowl only to have it warp when the bat flexes as you remove it? Super frustrating, and not a problem when you throw on non-flexible surfaces!

  • Dry erase markers work on them. This is perfect for group studio and classroom settings. By labeling the tiles, you can easily keep track of whose pot is whose. This is also handy when testing new clays.

  • Tiles last forever. As long as you don't drop them, tiles have the durability of ceramic. Our co-founder Jeff has been throwing on the same set of tiles for his entire 25 year career! The solid ABS plastic motherboard also lasts pretty much forever.

Who is Blue Bucket Tools?

Jeff Campana and Hope Limyansky-Smith, both full time ceramics teachers and potters, founded Blue Bucket Tools in early 2024 with the mission of making tools that work specifically for classroom studios. As teachers, we see opportunities to solve the common everyday problems in order to maximize the efficiency and enjoyment of taking and teaching pottery classes. We are a small company, and we personally prepare all the orders, answer the emails, and design all of our products.
